It’s been about a week now since we visited these places, and already my memory is fading. We decided to tackle all three of these destinations in one day, which proved to be a challenge. By the end…we were tired.
I should mention that the night before we left for this tour, we stayed out late watching Billy Elliott, so we were a little sleepy going to bed. Fast forward to 6am the following morning, and we were up and at ’em again!
Our first stop was Windsor castle. We were told the Her Majesty was there at the time, and there was one of those cute little guys with the big black fluffy hats guarding her entrance. Javier and I both agreed that the most spectacular part of the whole castle experience was… the doll house. Sadly, we were unable to take pictures of this doll house, but it was amazing! It was built for Queen Mary, took 3 years to complete, and required the skill of over 1500 craftsmen, artists and authors! Everything was real inside the doll house. The silverware and dishes were made out of real silver, there was running cold and hot water, electricity with working elevators, miniature paintings that were done by famous artists, and even had miniature crown jewels, which of course, were real! Unbelievable. You may think us a little silly for being so excited about this doll house, but if you saw it, I would guarantee you would be in awe as well. The rest of the castle was well…a castle. Beautiful chandeliers, paintings and lots of weapons, armor, and coats of arms. The great thing about this castle is that it is still fully functional. Another fun fact…when the Queen has a banquet, the place settings are measured with a ruler so that every setting is evenly spaced and therefore exactly the same at each seat.
We then briefly watched the changing of the guards, and had a walk through St. George’s chapel. Overall, there was so much to see, and we saw it all. In fact, we had to power walk back to our coach as we were running a little tardy 🙂
After this, we moved on to Stonehenge. Now this was something that has been on my bucket list for quite some time, so I was really looking forward to it. Apparently, the entrance and parking lot to Stonehenge used to be right next to the monument, but have since been moved about a mile away. This was really nice, I thought, because while we were there, it really felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. Stonehenge did not disappoint. It was truly amazing. We were able to listen to the different theories of why and how it was built, where the rocks came from, and how long it took.

I’ve heard some people say, “Yup…those are stones” and think no more of it. But to hear about how it was constructed, to see and understand the meaning of the land surrounding the stones, as well as realize that thousands of years ago native inhabitants from all over the (now) UK came together to build this sacred place, and that people traveled from other parts of the world just to see and touch the stones, is truly amazing.
Alright, time to return my inner anthropologist back to the closet.
Lastly, we spend the late afternoon in Oxford. I had no idea that Oxford was not a single university, but rather several different individual colleges (all with their own names and spread out all over the city) that make up Oxford. I felt kind of silly walking through some of the buildings because I kept thinking everything looked like a Harry Potter movie, but I was happy to find out…it actually was from the Harry Potter movies! So, on one hand I was kind of excited that I recognized the some of the buildings, but on the other hand…not so much. By the end of Oxford, we were exhausted. We returned to London, grabbed a quick bite and it was early to bed!
Until next time Family and friends,
