WE’RE HERE!

Well, if I told you that all has been amazing and wonderful…that would be a lie, so instead I’ll tell you the truth since it is far more entertaining.

I should preface this story with a story. The day before we left, I was feeling under the weather. I decided to take it easy while Javier spent some time with his friends and finished up some last minute shopping. Fast forward to 0400 day of departure. We wake to get ready to leave for the airport by 0430. About that time, Javier says…”Ummm, babe, our flight has been cancelled.” WHAT!?! Apparently, due to stormy weather and such, our connection to Chicago was not going to happen, so they rerouted us through Newark. No big deal other than I could’ve slept a couple extra hours. All goes well at the airport, and we’re off to Newark. About an hour into my flight, I notice that my ear hurts and the pressure is building. I try everything I can do to relieve the pressure…I’m eating, drinking, chewing gum, yawning, walking around shaking my head all over the place, took ibuprofen for the pain and enough sudafed to induce palpitations…no luck. So I sit for that short 5 hour flight unable to hear while little lightening bolts shoot through my ear every 30 seconds or so…awesome. Finally, we descend, my ear finds an altitude it doesn’t loathe, and decides to “pop!” on its own. All is well. I have two hours until another 6 hour flight to Dublin, but I am prepared. I take more sudafed and motrin, and constantly relieve the pressure until we reach cruising altitude. Success! I would like to add that Javier is asleep the whole time. Good for him.

We arrive in Dublin early in the morning, breeze through customs, and grab our stuff. Javier and I love, yes love, to take public transportation when we can, so we grab our stuff jump on a bus where the Belgain driver makes fun of Javier’s USA soccer jersey 🙁

Ireland is great. There’s free wifi absolutely EVERYWHERE! We’re staying in an area called Temple Bar, and are sleeping in a flat right above…well, Temple Bar. It’s noisy (good noisy) and there’s always live music. As I write this there is a duo serenading the passerby’s with a harmonica and tambourine. There are other instruments as well, but all I seem to hear is that swanky harmonica. The place itself is modest, but comfortable and clean. What more can you ask for when you’re staying above a bar? The area is absolutely adorable. Very quaint and picturesque.

Our first day was a wash. We slept for most of it, and grabbed an early dinner of Irish stew, fish and chips, and of course, beer. I was feeling worse, so I went to sleep early, and Javier went downstairs to enjoy and cold one and meet new friends. Not sure if he got into any shenanigans down there, but he came back in one piece, so I am happy.

Today, we overslept, and when I woke, my ear was totally plugged, and for those that remember, yes, it is the same ear that ruptured a few months back. So now I really can’t hear, and I’m in pain, lots of pain. We manage to get ourselves out of the door to eat, and I am just miserable. I have run out of ideas, am full of medication, and am truly miserable. I hate going to the doctor. Javier mentioned several times that we should go, but I am stubborn. About an hour after we eat I can’t function because of the pain. So, my loving boyfriend tells me, “Baby, if you were at home, you’d go to the doctor, right?” “Yes,” I say. He says, “Well, the world is our home now, so we should go to the doctor.” And just like that, we go to the doctor and…it’s infected. So, our first full day here and I had to go to the doctor, unbelievable! What a crappy start! Nonetheless, we had a lovely day walking all over the city, went to Trinity College, saw the Book of Kells, and walked through the largest single room library in all of Europe. It was absolutely gorgeous, like a beautiful, old, smelly dream. So many books, over 200,000 first editions dating back to Ireland’s beginnings. After that, we walked through the National Gallery, and had an all around splendid day. Javier has decided that his favorite meal is beef stew with Guiness. That would be Guiness IN the stew not with it 😉 We lucked out, and the weather is truly gorgeous, which really makes everything so much better!

Look at all those first edition books.

If you made it to the end, congratulations! This one was wordy.  Alright, off to bed. We’ve had a slight change in plans and have decided to head up to Belfast to meet with Dympna and her family tomorrow morning! Good night friends!

  1. Thoroughly enjoyed your post, thanks for sharing! Glad u have antibiotics on board; Javier knows exactly how to move you =D. I felt like I was hanging out by your window pain listening to the music with you.

    • Hi Angela! So, the healthcare experience was truly uneventful. We walked into the clinic, waited for about 5 minutes, the doctor looked in my ear and told me it was red and infected, wrote me a prescription, and we left. The whole process took about 10 minutes. Flat rate of 55 euros, which I should be able to submit to my insurance. It was really a breeze. When we went to northern Ireland this past weekend, we were telling our friends this story, and they were mentioning that their son fell and needed stitches, and when they went to the hospital, he was stitched up and sent on their way. No bill, nothing. But this was in northern Ireland, where they are under the UK and their universal healthcare. So, of course Javier looks at me and says, you couldn’t have waited one more day to have it taken care of up here? Oh, the love! 🙂

  2. Sorry to hear of the rough start…toothaches&earaches are not to be ignored. I perked up @ the mention of Temple bar. I know that place, the bar,I mean. We always try to grab one of their t shirts whenever anyone is in Dublin. For me it’s been awhile… I can’t wait to hear more of your stories… Such an enriching experience.

    • Thanks for the comment Maryann… We are staying in the same building as the temple bar. Live music inside and outside. We are listening to stir it up by BOB MARLEY at the moment. Fun … We’ll post as often as we can.

  3. Sorry it was a rough start. I recognize the pics of Ireland and it makes me miss all my friends there!! Just watching your clock tick with a year of travels makes me so jealous!!! hehe

    • Tiff, what a beautiful country with beautiful people! Definitely the warmest and friendliest people we’ve met so far. And we had no rain 🙂
