Fabico in Toulouse

Our quick stop in Toulouse was absolutely wonderful. One of Javier’s best friends from childhood is going to school in Toulouse, so we decided to stop by to say hi. We met with Fabricio at a restaurant near our apartment. Unlike with most people, I was immediately comfortable with Fabricio. I tend to observe people for a little while before engaging them…it’s just a quirk, but with Fabricio, I had none of that. He is such a genuinely friendly and inviting person. After meeting and eating, the three of us walked around Toulouse. We stopped by a snowboarding ramp that was set up for some sort of exhibition. It was significantly warmer than Paris, but they managed to keep the ramp and landing area full of snow…and ice. We watched for a while, and after seeing enough young boys fall rather hard, we decided to look for a place to grab a drink and catch up.

Along the way, we stopped by the bridge, which was lit and took pictures with the hospital at the other end. Fabricio told us that this was the picture that is on all the postcards for Toulouse. Toulouse is a typical college town. All of the students were by the water drinking, listening to music, and having a great time. We ended up at a Latin bar and ordered Peruvian beers- which made the guys really happy. Although, Javier says that after drinking in Belgium, other beers don’t really match up, and I have to agree with him. 🙂

It was about this time that I was feeling a little tired, but mostly, I wanted Javier and Fabricio to have some time by themselves. So when Fabricio mentioned moving to another bar, I took this as my cue to go home. The boys dropped me off at the apartment, and they continued on with their night. At the next bar, Javier and Fabricio met up with a couple of his local university friends, but according to Javier, without even meaning to, the two of them eventually separated from the others to catch up by themselves.

The next day, we met Fabricio at the metro station and decided to walk to the Japanese garden. We had a very pleasant walk along the river, and when we arrived to the garden, it was closed. We didn’t know what else to do, so we decided to catch a movie. We decided on Interstellar since it was one of the few movies Javier and I wanted to see, and was also something Fabricio wanted to see since it has to do with his major. It was so nice to watch a movie in a movie theater! We were so happy! We bought popcorn and soda, and had us a regular old movie date. It felt like home, and since Toulouse is a college town with students from all over, everything is in english! No subtitles. No voice-overs. Such a treat!

The following day was a school day, so Fabricio could only meet us for dinner. I had mentioned that I had not yet eaten beef bourguignon, and that I really wanted to try it before I left France. Fabricio googled a place and we decided to give it a shot. This restaurant was great. When we arrived, we were told to return at 8pm when the restaurant opens. At 8pm, we went back and had a seat at a table with two other ladies. A little while later, another couple joined our table. This restaurant is on the smaller side, and has a few large tables where everyone eats together. There are no menus per se. The chef cooks what he wants and that’s what’s for dinner! When we first arrived, we asked him if they served beef bourguignon, and he said that we were in luck, because he only prepares beef bourguignon once a week, and tonight was the night! Oh, goody! Before the bourguignon was set out, he had a variety of salads already on the table to eat. He also had a small propane stove in one corner where he had soup and a small table next to it where you could cut your own bread. Everything was self serve with the exception of the drinks.

Good wine.

We ordered a yummy bottle of wine called, “You f*** my wine?” I kid you not. When you want a new plate or bowl, there is a cupboard with a shelf for the dirty dishes, and another shelf of clean dishes- again all self serve. Finally, out came the beef bourguignon. It was delicious. The only downside to it was that I couldn’t eat more of it. I had eaten so much of the other stuff, that my appetite wasn’t enough to gorge on the bourguignon. Never fear…both Fabricio and Javier made up for it 🙂 The dessert was no exception, also delicious, and I may have taken one bite of each of the 5 desserts that were offered. We stayed for a couple hours just eating and chatting. Fabricio has been living in a variety of countries for quite a few years now, and was therefore very comfortable, and kind enough, to speak English the entire time. It was really nice to be able to join in conversation with them and to hear all of his adventures from over the years.

After dinner, there were big hugs and we said our goodbyes, hoping to catch up again in Barcelona. Javier was really happy that he was able to spend time with Fabricio, and I am so glad I had the opportunity to meet him and get to know him. Even though we only visited for a couple of days, it was one of the more memorable trips thanks to Fabricio…and the beef bourguignon. 🙂
