Scandinavia…starting with Oslo

Hmmm…so, Norway. I have mixed feelings about Oslo. It was a REALLY cool city. The parks, the waterfront, the neighborhoods, all were really great. That being said, all of these things were slightly overshadowed by the EXPENSE of this city! Holy moly, we knew things were going to get more expensive as we moved into Scandinavia, but we were not at all prepared for this! Also, the people were not as helpful or friendly as we had become accustomed to, which put a slight damper on things as well. But first, the positives!

We walked to this park one day called Frogner Park. We decided to take our pizza and drinks for a picnic. I have never seen a park like this. We were told there were sculptures all over, but it was much more than that. Yes, there were sculptures, but these were more than a few sculptures here and there. There were sculptures that lined a large walking bridge that led

to this huge column centerpiece of intertwined bodies. Sounds weird? It was, but at the same time really interesting. What I liked most about it were the sculptures that surrounded the column. The structures themselves were very simple, and without too much detail, but somehow, they all seemed very real and full of emotion.

We found the weather in Scandinavia to be a little tricky. When the sun is shining, it’s hot, but when the clouds move in, it doesn’t just cool down, it gets cold, and sometimes it’s cold when it rains, while other times, it will be warm and humid while raining. Confusing? Yes it is. All this to say, I am constantly having to take layers on and off, and Javier goes from hot to

hotter. We went to a few museums during one of these hot/cold/rainy days. The first was the Viking ship museum. Inside they had three different viking ships that they had unearthed and somewhat restored. The ships were absolutely amazing, but inside the tiny museum was stifling! This museum is very small. It is just large enough to house the ships. I enjoyed the simplicity of it. The detail on the ships was amazing, and seeing the ships really gave the feeling of awe and trepidation imagining how it must have felt to see these ships coming toward your village many years ago. We also visited the Kon-tiki museum which is a museum based on Thor Heyerdahl’s sailing from South America to Polynesia. A very different museum, but quite amusing.

We started and ended in an area called Aker Brygge-a very beautiful and high-end area of town. We had also spent a bit of time just walking around this area, and enjoying the sites. One night, Javier and I decided to grab a local beer at a bar and paid $15 for a pint. We were told by our host that had we been in Aker Brygge, it would have cost us $25!!! FOR A BEER! And here we were squabbling over $15…

On one of our days, we took the metro to Holmenkollen and walked around. Holmenkollen is the location of the ski jumped used in the winter olympics and ski-flying world championships. There a little ski museum, and an opportunity to go up to the top. The jump is incredible, and during the off season, they convert it into a zipline!

So, you’ve already read the story about the beer. On our first day, Javier wanted pho. We found a little hole-in-the-wall spot in an area of town that was not the least bit touristy. Dare I say it was the kind of neighborhood that you may not want to walk through at night. Anyway…it was our first day, we had not yet gained the knowledge that would haunt us every day we were there, and we were hungry! Javier ordered pho and I a banh mi sandwich. My sandwhich was around $8…not too bad. Javier’s pho was $25! For PHO! That’s when we knew we were in trouble. One day, I wanted a snack. Since everything was so expensive, we decided on some McDonald french fries, and Javier would get a coke. So, what do you think we paid for regular fries and a coke? You guess it…$9! Almost $10 for some fries and a coke. We had a good laugh at some other Americans we overheard complaining about the prices. The prices were truly ridiculous.  It would have only required us to look at our train ticket from the airport into the city to get the idea that things would be expensive. About $30 each for a commuter train…again, ridiculous. We actually found another train to the airport for our return where we were both able to travel to the airport for half the price!

Okay, enough complaining. All in all, Oslo was a nice place. It was very pleasant to walk around and we loved all of the artwork sprinkled throughout the city. We made our way to the National Gallery where we took a tour with a quirky little guide whose english was a little difficult to understand and Javier sneaked a picture of the famous “The Scream” by Munch. We observed yet another pro-Palestinian demonstration, ate some reindeer and Norwegian meatballs, and went on a ferry ride on the fjord…i just love that word!
