I have not written anything for almost three weeks! Javier and I switched from travel mode in vacation with the arrival of Annette, so we’ve been playing for the past weeks. We are currently sitting in our hotel room (yes, we fancy) in Salzburg, which looks like something out of Shirley Temple’s, “Heidi.” Everything is made out of wood (real wood) with flowers painted everywhere. The curtains look like the drapes Maria used to make play clothes for the children, and the hills outside our window are green and inviting us to frolic and sing without restraint. Can you tell I am feeling inspired here? But enough of Salzburg! On to Prague!
We had a little blip on the train from Dresden to Prague. Apparently, they check your train ticket in every country you enter. So for us, someone checked our ticket in Germany and then again in Czech. Well, to make a long and bitter story short and sweet, we only had an electronic ticket, and while those are just fine in Germany, they are not in Czech. A minor setback, and major irritation, but the moral of the story is…ALWAYS print your ticket even if they give you an e-ticket. Go figure.
Javier and I had a couple of days in Prague before Annette arrived, but we didn’t want to start exploring without her, so we used the days to learn the layout of the city, and just wander. Prague is a very confusing city. The main tourist area is called Prague 1. It is designed like a medieval city, so the streets are not straight. They curve every which way and often just stop and a foot path takes you the rest of the way. It’s weird, but cool, and with the cobblestones, tunnel passages, and old buildings, it just feels historic. We decided to meet Annette at the airport, which turned into an adventure after getting lost and having to run, at night, in an area completely foreign to us, for about a half mile to catch the right bus. Why we got lost? Well, I for one choose to blame Google maps, but Javier may have a different story. Either way, we
arrived before Annette just a little sweatier and frazzled than expected. Annette arrived at around 10:30pm on the eve of her birthday. Once we arrived home, we dropped off her stuff and headed to a local bar to celebrate! Nothing crazy, just a couple of beers, a happy birthday song, and back home to sleep.
The next day we took, our favorite, the FREE WALKING TOUR! YAY!!! We learned a bunch of stuff about Prague, saw the concert hall where Mozart actually conducted a symphony, learned the history about the Jewish quarter- did you know that the Jewish people were only allowed to live in a certain area, and therefore had to be buried in said area, which therefore caused them to be buried on top of
one another to the tune of 12 layers deep!?! Also, they are not allowed to remove headstones, so there are literally thousands of headstones strewn about and they only represent a small fraction of those who are buried there! We learned all about Czech history, most of which allude me at the moment, but it was a great way to spend half a day, and we found an authentic Czech restaurant recommended by our tour guide.

Do you remember our friends, Petr and Lenka, that we picked up in Scotland? Well, when we arrived in Prague, Javier emailed Petr, and as it turned out, the best day for every one was Annette’s birthday. So, that night, we went out. Petr and Lenka took us to delicious Czech food, beer, and introduced Annette to Absinthe 🙂 After dinner, the five of us headed over to a bar where we continued the celebration. Lenka had to work early in the morning, so she visited with us for a while before she left, but Petr was such a great host and stayed with us until we could drink no more. Oh, the walk home… and the videos…
Next day, slept until noon. After dragging ourselves out of bed, and eating a hearty American breakfast at James Dean’s restaurant, we set out for the day. We stopped at the astronomical clock and watched the hourly show. Annette and I were sucked into a gingerbread shop where we purchased (and ate) fresh gingerbread cookies. Yummy. Afterward, we walked Charles’ bridge where Annette and Javier took pictures of the statues that line the bridge on either side and watch the street performers. I would like to mention that we walked Charles’ bridge twice that day. Once in the early afternoon and again at night, so the photographers could get their day and night shots, which I have to admit, were pretty cool…except for the spiders at night…ooooh, the spiders…
There happened to be a wine festival during the weekend we were there, so naturally we had to stop by. On the way, we stopped by the dancing house, aka: Fred and Ginger. Once we arrived, we drank the local wine, Burcak, some cannabis cider, as well as tasted a variety of wines from the local wineries. Annette and I settled on some yummy cheese, gingerbread (yes, gingerbread), and couple glasses of red, while Javier found a carbonated version of Burcak, and called it a good day. That night, we made our way to the local Irish pub to drink a few beers and watch some football. Javier was happy.
The next day we decided to take the castle tour, which boasts the largest medieval castle in the
world and where the monks brew their own beer, which can only be purchased on site. Apparently, the church on site has been burned down something like 7 times, since it was built, and they just keep rebuilding it in the exact same spot. Our guide was great. Really dry, and kind of a smart ass, we all had a good time. We walked by the presidential palace, where he told us many stories about the president, who sounds like quite the character. Apparently, he likes to drink, and then show up for official business. The castle site on top of a hill that overlooks the city. We had clear skies that day, which made for gorgeous views and great pictures.
We had a great time in Prague, and made some great memories with great people. But, our time had come to an end, and we were off to Budapest!
