Hi everyone, it’s been a while and all is well over here. Nothing too exciting to report on in the past week, which…I guess could be a good thing, yes?
When we returned to Dublin from Ballycastle, we only had a couple days left. First, we visited the Kilmainham gaol (jail)- as tourists…it’s an old jail-where the political prisoners were kept and some executed. Second, we visited the Guinness storehouse where Javier and I learned how to craft the perfect pint of Guinness.
Did you know there is an “official” way to pour a Guinness? The first pour must stop at the top of the harp (assuming you are using a Guinness glass). Then, you must wait exactly 119.5 seconds. Lastly, top off the Guinness and wait, yes, another 119.5 seconds before drinking. There are all kinds of other directions about how one should drink Guinness, but we wouldn’t want to take all the mystery out of it, now would we? Finally, the old Jameson distillery, where Javier was chosen for a whiskey tasting- for the record, he chose the Irish whiskey over the American and Scotch varieties..no peer pressure, I’m sure.
We spent the past few days in Cork, Ireland with a lovely lady called Fiona. She lives in this beautiful, large home on
a hill that overlooks the city of Cork. Fantastic views. Here, we were able to steal a little R&R, as well as plan the next few steps in our journey. While in Cork, we visited Blarney Castle, complete with poison garden, which Javier refused to sample…what a party pooper. We both kissed the Blarney stone. Javier was rather grossed out that we were kissing the same stone after thousands of strangers. I’ll be honest, when I think about it, it grosses me out too, but when in Rome…

Just a side note…the Blarney castle is a claustrophobic’s nightmare! There was a pathway to the dungeon where, at times, we
almost had to crawl because we were so hunched over. It was dimly lit, with no ventilation until you arrived at the tiny cavern at the end that had a small opening. The stairway to the top of the castle…not much better.
Yesterday, we visited Kinsale. A small seaside town in west Cork. Very quaint with brightly colored buildings and tiny narrow streets- like something out of a fairytale. It was a lovely day trip and the weather in and around Cork was very friendly to us, and for that, we are very thankful.
Which brings us to the present. We are currently sitting on a ferry. Now the biggest ferry I’ve been on are the ones out of Seattle- you know, where the cars drive on and such. Well, this thing is huge with just a few people scattered about, a TV to watch the world cup, and the staples of my new diet- tea and scones. I kind of wish I could travel like this everywhere. It’s so great! I’ve never been on a cruise, but I’m starting to see the appeal 🙂
We have a loooooong bus ride ahead of us, the end of which should be London. Javier and I have had a really great time in Ireland, but we are definitely ready for a new scene. Thanks to some friends, we have a long list of attractions to visit while in London, as well as a friend from college whose flat we will be crashing for a couple nights- Thank you, Tharshish 🙂
Love you all. Stay safe and healthy, please!
Awesome photos. You two look like you’re having a killer time! I went to Ireland back in 2009 and loved it. The view from atop the Guinness factory is epic…not to mention having a freshly poured pint in hand makes it even better. Keep it up guys!!!
Thanks Mark! We are having a great time. You know, I don’t even like Guinness (shhh..don’t tell anyone) but I have to say, it tasted pretty good standing on that 7th floor overlooking the city. Maybe I was just in the moment, or maybe I’ve been changed forever! 🙂 Hugs to you, Sig and Eva! Javier says hello, btw. 🙂
Sounds like you hit all the important places! hehe Well, we all share germs now on that Blarney stone. lol
