The next morning, we slept in…again.
Woke up in time to take the afternoon city tour. It was a huge group that was broken up into 3 smaller groups. Our guide was Orshie- not sure if I spelled it right, but the way she taught us is…”If you’re not sure who your guide is, ask yourself, is it she? She? Or-she? And there you have it!” It has since become one of our favorite words on this trip. Orshie was great. Really excited and friendly.
She taught us how to say “cheers” in Hungarian, which is really difficult to pronounce correctly. She says, “Just say ‘I’m-a-shake-a-tree’ really fast, and the people will know what you’re saying.” Haha! Thanks Orshie. And she took us to eat the very best dark chocolate ice cream ever!!! Actually, it was the only dark chocolate ice cream I have ever eaten, but it was out of this world! After the tour we met our new friends for dinner, where we ate authentic Hungarian food, and then the 5 of us took a night boat cruise up and down the Danube. The buildings looked pretty fantastic at night, and the weather was perfect. We said good-bye to our friends, as they were heading to Vienna the following day, and made our way home.
Our host gave us a local place to eat, that turned out to be one of my favorite meals. We decided to give it a try as it was on the way to our day of rest and relaxation at the Gellert thermal baths. Budapest is known for it’s thermal baths from the natural underground hot springs, so there are several thermal baths to choose from. We decided to go to Gellert during the day on Friday, and visit Szechenyi
(the most popular) the following evening. What a wonderful day. There are both indoor and outdoor baths. The temperatures vary, and the baths are beautiful. We spent about 4 hours relaxing in the different baths. Even Javier, who generally needs to be active in order to enjoy himself found it relaxing and enjoyed it as much as Annette and I. After a long and relaxing day, the three of us stopped for dinner on the way home, and once at home, I was relaxed and decided to stay and chat with my family, while Javier and Annette headed out with their cameras to take more night pictures.
The following day, we woke up early to go to the central market where we perused the aisles of local meats and cheese, and had breakfast. We then walked back to the castle for the chocolate festival! It was all things chocolate, and Annette and I found a dark chocolate seller who had various dark chocolate delights that were devilishly good. Afterward, we crossed the bridge that was

normally bustling with cars, but for the day, was closed to all traffic except pedestrian. We took our final tour of the Jewish quarter where we ended at…Szimple! This was perfect for us, seeing as we didn’t get many pictures the last time we were there, plus Javier and Annette had planned to return there after the tour anyway to take some pictures. We didn’t stay long as we needed to get home and rest for
our evening. We ate at this really great sandwich shop, where Javier and I shared a cold soup that tasted like yogurt with sour cherries, while waiting for our sandwiches, kinda weird but good! As I mentioned earlier, we had planned to go to Szechenyi baths for a night party. They turn off the yellow lights, and instead turn on neon lights. The water is warm, and they they blast dance music compliments of the DJ. We were told that the guy to girl ratio was way off, and boy was it! There were at least 10 guys to every girl, which made for great people watching. The minute a group of girls entered the pool, a group of guys would attack, and if the girls didn’t want to be bothered, no worries, once that group of guys left, another was right there behind them, cause surely the girls just didn’t want THOSE guys around. We had a good time, met some really cool people, and had some really good laughs, most of them at Annette’s expense. The night was long, yet over before we knew it. So, at around 3:30am, we hailed a taxi, and made our way home. Good thing Budapest is a safe city!
Again, we slept in…
We walked around looking for souvenirs and took some more pictures. We returned to a Jewish bakery that our guide pointed out to us for some flódni, which is this really sweet cake made with several layers including poppyseed, walnut, plum jam, and apple, yeah kinda weird. After this we found ourselves back at Szimple where we ordered a round, and jumped into the half-car and enjoyed the evening. The next morning Annette and I headed to a little shop where we saw a few items we wanted to buy. The shop hours stated that it would open at
10am, so we were there at 9:50 waiting for the doors to open. Waiting… and waiting… 10:00…waiting…10:10…waiting. We waited until 10:20 and finally had to leave. We needed to leave the apt by 10:30 in order to make it to the train station in time for our train to Vienna. By the time we made it back, we had to rush to get our stuff and get out of the door. Our walk was about 35 minutes if walking leisurely, but we made it in 20, sweating, tired, and frazzled with 3 minutes to spare.
All and all, Budapest was a fascinating city. There is so much to do and see. We met some really great people, which always makes for a memorable time. I honestly could have spent a few more days there with plenty to do. It is also one of the few cities that both Javier and I would really like to return to some day. Of all the places I have been, Budapest is rather high on my list of must-see places. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for listening to my rambling tales. Good night, and we’ll visit Vienna next with the addition of Baylon and all the shenanigans that happened there!

Hi you two!
Awesome pics, you both look so fantastically happy! You had me at chocolate ice cream… Javier, we had some Oaxacan chocolate ice cream for you at Khoa’s going away party at Mercado, it was delish! It’s my first year of not running around Europe… I’ve attempted to assuage my withdrawals with foreign films and international fare, but your blogs are certainly doing a great job in taking me back to many fond places and memories. Continue having a blast and thanks for sharing 😉
Hi Renee,
Makes us happy to know that you like the pictures, and read the blog… Jackie loves dark chocolate, and I do remember the Oxacan Chocolate ice cream; yummy. Well… If you’re not doing Europe.. I guess we’ll meet Khoa in Vietnam, right? If you get a chance, Say hi to Khoa, Melinda, Damiso, Alex, Shannon and the rest of the peeps… Vicky Cristina Barcelona….
All the best, JandJ
